Wilhelmina Bay. 27th December 2017

Wilhemina Bay, 10 miles of dramatic scenery with high glacier walls, huge icebergs, whales and seals was Shackleton's intended destination, hoping to encounter a whaler to rescue his 27 men who had trudged 800 miles and four months across the Weddell Sea. We spent several hours cruising around in the zodiac, wondering at the extraordinary shapes of the icebergs, often like buildings or monuments, with tunnels and spires and seeing many seals and birds. Chunks of ice just floated around, glittering like jewelled crowns in the sun of a glorious day.
